Industrial/ Office Ethernet
Two worlds become one – Ethernet is a network technology which was originally developed to link local networks (LAN). Nowadays, Ethernet is finding an ever-increasing number of applications in industrial manufacturing. Industrial Ethernet is enabling the office world to be linked to the industrial world.
Today, Ethernet has become the most widespread communication technology in the world. It allows data to be rapidly exchanged between all appliances connected to a local network. Ethernet uses the widest range of transfer media including copper, glass fibre, polymer fibre or even wireless.
Today, thanks to its simplicity, the Ethernet standard has become the most widely used standard in the world. The reason behind its universal acceptance and popularity lies in the fact that it offers the basic technology behind the largest network in the world – the Internet. The benefits of the Ethernet and the associated concept of networks are clear:
- Simple, flexible expansion options.
- Rapid commissioning thanks to simple connection technology.
- Dynamic bandwidth adjustment, currently up to 10Gbit/s.
- Consistent networking of different application areas (office and industry).
Classic field bus system
The mechanical and manufacturing level is strongly characterised by field bus systems:
AS-Interface, Profibus, Device-NET and CANopen.
As a communications system, you can connect a variety of sensors and actuators, such as measuring probes or drives, which can be connected using a control or logic unit. Communication takes place up to the actuator/sensor level. Transfer rates are up to 12 Mbit/s, with a maximum number of 255 devices depending on the respective bus system. They are primarily assembled in a linear structure, with all machines being connected in a series.
To provide the user with a clear selection guide, Lapp created the "Data Cable Guide". This enables you to select your required bus cable and the corresponding data plug in a matter of minutes.
New possibilities thanks to industrial Ethernet
Industrial Ethernet represents an attractive alternative to the classic field bus system. The advantages offered by the (manufacturer-independent) Ethernet standard in the office are also being increasingly recognised by industrial users. The open Ethernet standard opens up new opportunities for industry.
